Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Hospital Offers “One-Stop Work-Up” for Cardiac Patients
(New Brunswick, NJ) - Cardiac patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are now able to undergo their diagnostic and preoperative testing in one day thanks to the new “One Stop” option for select patients. Using a nurse navigator as their central point of contact, patients will be able to consolidate their required testing into a single visit. RWJUH has created a designated consultation area to help limit the amount of traveling each patient has to do within the hospital. During each “One Stop” visit, patients will be able to have an array of tests, including blood work, ECG, echocardiograms, and CT scans. This will help decrease the amount of time each patient has to spend at the hospital, as well as shortening the length of time between a patient’s referral to their surgical treatment.
“In this era of COVID-19 our One Stop Goal is to facilitate a safe, seamless patient flow, and ensure convenience all while championing, best practice and patient centered care,” said Novia Miller, Nurse Navigator for Cardiovascular Services.
Treating Patients with Cardiovascular Disease during the COVID Pandemic
“We recognize that this is a time in which some patients are hesitant to visit a hospital to receive needed cardiac care. RWJUH is committed to developing new methods of care that reduce the time spent in the hospital and improve patient safety outcomes,” said Dr. Mark Russo, Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Director of Structural Heart Disease, and Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “We are exploring new approaches to ensure our patients’ best interests."
Using preoperative and postoperative telehealth visits to provide easy access to health care professionals and limit time in the hospital is one of the many measures RWJUH is taking to ensure patient safety through the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, RWJUH is testing all patients and staff for COVID-19 and has implemented streamlined pre-admission testing; in-hospital temperature screening check points with no-touch thermometers; and rigorous sanitization procedures, including Tru-D UV Light Disinfection.
“Rutgers and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital continue to serve as a national leader in treating valve disease. Our focus on less invasive approaches and rapid recovery have helped us maintain outcomes that far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications,” said Dr. Leonard Y. Lee, James W. Mackenzie, M.D. Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
